A web browser is the software application that fetches, interprets, and displays web content. When a developer writes HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, the browser is the program that turns that code into the visual, interactive page you see on screen. This process is called rendering.

Here is the critical insight: the browser is not a passive window — it is an active interpreter. Just as two actors might read the same script differently, two browsers can interpret the same code and produce slightly different results. This is why understanding browsers is essential for every software engineer.

What is a rendering engine? The rendering engine is the core component inside a browser that reads HTML and CSS and converts it into the visual layout you see. Different engines can interpret the same code slightly differently. Blink (Chrome, Edge, Opera) and WebKit (Safari) share a common ancestor, so they behave similarly. Gecko (Firefox) is independently developed and sometimes renders things differently. This is why developers must test their websites in multiple browsers.
