⚙️ Server-Side (Back-End) Programming

The back-end (also called the server-side) is the part of the web system that the user never sees. It runs on a remote server — a powerful computer in a data centre somewhere in the world. The back-end handles all the logic, processing, security, and data management that makes a web application work.

When you click "Login" on a website, your browser (front-end) sends your username and password to the server (back-end). The server then: looks up the username in the database, hashes the password you entered, compares it to the stored hash, decides whether to grant access, and sends a response back to the browser. All of this happens on the server — the browser just displays the result.

Why software engineers must know both: A front-end developer who does not understand the back-end cannot build forms that submit correctly, cannot debug why data is not loading, and cannot design interfaces that account for server response times. A back-end developer who does not understand the front-end builds APIs that are confusing to use and returns data in formats the front-end cannot easily display. Modern software engineers are expected to understand both sides — this is called being a full-stack developer.
