The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is an international organisation that develops open standards for the web. It was founded in 1994 by Tim Berners-Lee — the same person who invented the World Wide Web in 1989. The W3C is not a company and it does not build websites. Instead, it creates the rules and standards that every website and browser must follow so that the web works consistently for everyone, everywhere.

Think of the W3C like the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) but specifically for the web. Just as ISO ensures that a USB cable made in China works in a laptop made in Japan, the W3C ensures that a website built in Australia works in every browser, on every device, in every country, for every user — including users with disabilities, users who speak different languages, and users on different devices.

💡 Why Should a Software Engineer Care About W3C?

If you build websites that do not follow W3C standards, your site may break in certain browsers, be inaccessible to users with disabilities (which is illegal in Australia under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992), be invisible to search engines, fail to work in other countries, or expose user data through security vulnerabilities. Following W3C standards is not optional for professional web development — it is the baseline expectation.
