📡 TCP/IP — The Foundation of the Internet

Before we look at individual protocols, you need to understand the system they all run inside. TCP/IP is not a single protocol — it is a suite (a collection) of protocols that provides the foundation for all internet communication. Every protocol you will learn about in this lesson — HTTP, FTP, SMTP, all of them — runs on top of TCP/IP. It is the operating system of the internet.

TCP/IP is organised into four layers, each with a specific job. Data passes down through the layers when being sent, and back up through the layers when being received. Each layer adds its own information (like wrapping a present in multiple layers of packaging) and each layer only needs to understand its own job.

TCP vs UDP — Two Ways to Deliver Packets

The Transport layer gives you a choice between two protocols: TCP and UDP. This choice depends on whether you need accuracy or speed.

TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) guarantees that every packet arrives, in the correct order, with no corruption. Before any data is sent, TCP performs a three-way handshake: your computer sends a SYN message ("I want to connect"), the server responds with SYN-ACK ("OK, I acknowledge"), and your computer sends ACK ("Confirmed, let's begin"). Only then does data flow. If a packet is lost, TCP detects it and resends it. This makes TCP perfect for web pages, emails, and file downloads where accuracy is critical — you do not want missing words in an email or a corrupted file.

UDP (User Datagram Protocol) sends packets without any checking. There is no handshake, no confirmation of delivery, and no resending lost packets. This sounds unreliable — and it is — but it is also much faster. UDP is used for video calls, online gaming, and live streaming where speed matters more than perfection. If one frame of your Zoom call is lost, it is better to show the next frame immediately than to freeze the video while waiting for a resend.

TCP is like sending a parcel via registered post — it is tracked at every step, you get a delivery confirmation, and if it is lost, the post office resends it. UDP is like shouting information across a crowded room — it is fast, but some words might get lost, and you do not stop to repeat them.
