🧠 Why Two's Complement Is Genius

There were other ways to handle negative numbers (like "sign-and-magnitude" where the first bit is literally just a +/- flag). So why did the entire computing industry choose two's complement?

✨ The Killer Feature: Addition Just Works

With two's complement, the computer does not need separate circuits for addition and subtraction. Adding a negative number automatically gives the correct answer, using the exact same hardware as adding positive numbers.

📝 Example: 50 + (-42) using binary addition

50 = 00110010, -42 = 11010110

Carry	1	1	1		1
50	0	0	1	1	0	0	1	0
+ (-42)	1	1	0	1	0	1	1	0
Result	0	0	0	0	1	0	0	0

00001000 = 8. And 50 + (-42) = 8. ✅ It just works!

(The carry out of bit 7 is discarded — it overflows and disappears, which is correct behaviour.)

Every CPU ever made	Intel, AMD, ARM (phones), Apple Silicon — all use two's complement. One addition circuit handles both positive and negative numbers.
Fortnite damage system	Health change of -35 is stored in two's complement. The game just adds it: 100 + (-35) = 65 health remaining.
Minecraft coordinates	Y-axis goes from -64 to 320. Negative depth values use two's complement in the game engine.
Temperature sensors	A sensor reading -8°C sends the two's complement binary to the computer. No special handling needed.
