No one person can build secure software alone. The applications you use every day — Instagram, Google, Minecraft, Fortnite — are built by teams of hundreds or even thousands of people, each bringing different skills, perspectives, and expertise. Collaboration is not optional in software engineering; it is fundamental.

Think about building a house. You would not expect one person to be the architect, the plumber, the electrician, the carpenter, AND the interior designer. Each tradesperson brings specialised expertise. The architect designs the structure, but the electrician knows the building codes for wiring. If the architect tried to do the wiring themselves, they might create a fire hazard. The same principle applies to software: a front-end developer might build a beautiful login page, but a security specialist is needed to ensure the authentication is actually secure.

In the context of secure software development, collaboration is especially critical because security vulnerabilities often exist at the boundaries between different components. The front-end team might assume the back-end validates input. The back-end team might assume the database handles encryption. Without collaboration and clear communication, these assumptions create gaps that attackers exploit.
