Building secure software is not just about knowing security concepts — it is about applying them in real code and real systems. This lesson covers four interconnected areas that every software engineer must implement: how you protect data, how you secure the system, how you preserve user privacy, and how you comply with laws and regulations.

These four areas overlap significantly. Encrypting a database protects data (data protection), makes the system harder to breach (security), keeps user information private (privacy), and satisfies legal requirements (compliance). A single feature can serve all four purposes.

💡 Why Software Engineers Must Know This

In 2022, the Australian Government passed the Privacy Legislation Amendment increasing maximum penalties to $50 million per breach. Software engineers are now personally accountable for building systems that protect data, maintain security, preserve privacy, and comply with the law. Ignorance of these requirements is not a defence. Every line of code you write has legal implications.
